SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 310
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to recognize the Longhorns baseball team of The University of Texas at Austin for winning the 2002 National Collegiate Athletic Association championship title; and WHEREAS, With an awesome victory in the final contest of the season, the Longhorns attained their fifth national title; and WHEREAS, Texas advanced to the national championship game by defeating Rice and Stanford universities; in the last game of the season, the Longhorns won over the South Carolina Gamecocks with a score of 12-6, ending the season with a record of 57-15; and WHEREAS, Each Longhorn brought unique talent and perseverance to the national championship playoffs; in addition, Huston Street, the team's relief pitcher, distinguished himself by setting a new College World Series record with four saves, earning the title of Most Outstanding Player of the series; and WHEREAS, Head coach Augie Garrido, a National Coach of the Year honoree, played a major role in assuring the team's victory, and he was ably backed up by assistant coaches Frank Anderson and Tommy Harmon; and WHEREAS, The members of the baseball team of The University of Texas at Austin have exhibited the highest ideals of sportsmanship throughout the 2002 season and during the national championship playoffs; the university and the team's many fans take great pride in these outstanding young men; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the baseball team and the coaching staff of The University of Texas at Austin on their accomplishments throughout the season and extend congratulations to them on earning their fifth national championship; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
