SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 360
In Memory
of
Patrick Joseph Dowd
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Patrick Joseph Dowd, who
died March 9, 2003, at the age of 69; and
WHEREAS, Patrick Dowd was born in New York City on
April 21, 1933, the son of Irish immigrants; he earned a bachelor
of science degree in psychology from Fordham University in
New York City and a master's degree in research psychology from
the University of Louisville; and
WHEREAS, He served in the United States Army from 1957
to 1959, and in 1960, he moved to San Antonio where he earned a
master's degree in clinical psychology from Trinity University;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Dowd was a civilian employee of the
United States Air Force Research Laboratory at Brooks Air Force
Base, where he studied motion sickness and the causes of visual
illusions often experienced by pilots; he retired in 1994; and
WHEREAS, Patrick Dowd was proud of his Irish ancestry, and
he was a prominent member of the Irish community in San Antonio,
where he organized the city's Saint Patrick's Day activities for
35 years; he was a founder of the Harp and Shamrock Society of
Texas and was in charge of such Saint Patrick's Day events as the
street and river parades and the wreath-laying ceremony at the
Alamo; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Patrick Dowd gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his
wisdom, warmth, and sense of humor will not be forgotten by
those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, A devoted husband and brother, he lived his
life to the fullest, and he leaves behind memories that will be
treasured forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Patrick Joseph Dowd: his wife of 24 years,
Virginia Mary Dowd; and his brothers, James J. Dowd and
Frank J. Dowd; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Patrick Joseph Dowd.
