SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 377
In Memory
of
Hoover J. Wright
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Cypress, the community of Prairie View, and citizens
across the state in mourning the loss of Hoover J. Wright, who
died March 7, 2003; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wright was a world renowned coach at Prairie
View A&M University for over 40 years; while he was best known
for his accomplishments in track and field, he also served as
athletic director and head football coach; and
WHEREAS, A native of Hebron, Maryland, he earned a
bachelor's degree from Maryland State University and a master's
degree from Pennsylvania State University; he began his coaching
career at Shorter College in North Little Rock, Arkansas; and
WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the Panther track and field
program attained unparalleled success, including two National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Indoor titles, one
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Outdoor title,
five Southwestern Athletic Conference crowns, and the 1970
United States Track and Field Association national title; and
WHEREAS, Coach Wright was inducted into the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Track Coaches Hall of
Fame in 1976, Prairie View A&M University's Sports Hall of Fame
in 1992, and the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame
in 1994; and
WHEREAS, His many honors included his selection as Coach
of the Year by both the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics; he also
served three times as a staff member of the United States
National Track and Field Team and as an assistant coach at the
1972 Munich Olympic Games; his record of success created a demand
for him to share his winning formula at various coaching clinics
around the nation; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Mr. Wright gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by
those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, Hoover Wright lived his life to the fullest and
was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Hoover J. Wright: his wife of 49 years,
Eloise McCreary Wright; his four children, Romana, Sondra,
Shawneequee, and Hoover Wright, Jr.; and his eight
grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
do so in memory of Hoover J. Wright.
