SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 382

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to  
recognize March as American Red Cross Month and March 19, 2003, 
as American Red Cross Day at the State Capitol; and
	WHEREAS, The mission of the American Red Cross throughout 
its history has been to help people in need, and that mission is 
more relevant than ever today as the American Red Cross confronts 
the unique challenges our state and our nation face; and
	WHEREAS, After the terrorist attacks against this nation, 
the heroic efforts of members of the American Red Cross became a 
source of strength to people around the world and led to a bold 
new initiative to better serve the nation; with its new program, 
Together We Prepare, the Red Cross is leading the way in 
empowering individuals and families to protect themselves; and
	WHEREAS, Compassionate and caring people who volunteer 
through the American Red Cross make a difference in the lives of 
others; last year, more than 33,500 silent heroes volunteered at 
their local Red Cross chapters, almost 508,000 took classes in 
lifesaving skills, and volunteer donors made 102,000 blood 
donations through the American Red Cross; and
	WHEREAS, For more than 86 years, the Texas chapters of the 
American Red Cross have provided relief to victims of disasters 
while helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to 
emergencies; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend the American Red Cross for its 
efforts in helping others and for the invaluable services it 
provides our state and nation and encourage all Texans to pay 
tribute to this organization on March 19, 2003; and, be it 
further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
the American Red Cross as an expression of high regard from the 
Texas Senate.
