SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 385
	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased 
to recognize Dr. Melvin Spira on his selection as the Houston 
Society of Plastic Surgeons' Distinguished Plastic Surgeon for 
2003; and
	WHEREAS, Dr. Spira recently retired after a long and 
distinguished career, and he will be honored by his colleagues, 
family, and friends at the society's meeting on May 8, 2003; and
	WHEREAS, The United States Navy veteran graduated from 
Northwestern University Graduate School in 1951 and earned 
his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1956; 
he served his internship at Duke University Hospital before 
relocating to Houston in 1959 to complete his residency training 
at Jefferson Davis Hospital; and
	WHEREAS, During his career, Dr. Spira served as chief of 
plastic surgery at Methodist Hospital, Saint Luke's Episcopal 
Hospital, The Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Ben Taub General 
Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital, and the Baylor College of 
Medicine Department of Surgery; and
	WHEREAS, Dr. Spira's articles have appeared in numerous 
publications, and he has trained countless plastic surgeons 
who are now located across the country; he is a highly respected 
leader in the medical community who has served on many boards and 
committees and has received many honors; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 
78th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Melvin Spira on his 


outstanding career in medicine and for earning the title of 
Distinguished Plastic Surgeon for 2003 and extend best wishes to 
him for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
