SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 440
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the J. M. Hanks High School of the Ysleta Independent
School District in El Paso for its outstanding educational
reputation; and
WHEREAS, The school was named for the late Jesse Mack Hanks,
the first superintendent of the Ysleta Independent School District
and one of the state's foremost educational innovators; and
WHEREAS, Today, under the leadership of Principal Carol Allen,
a dedicated team of nearly 150 teachers instruct over 2,400 Hanks
High School students and work with them in a host of extracurricular
activities; and
WHEREAS, The students have been named Academic Team
District Champions on six different occasions by the University
Interscholastic League, and the school has been named a Recognized
School by the Texas Education Agency; and
WHEREAS, Hanks High School students have been officers in
the Texas Association of Student Council's District IX; they have
also been recognized as award-winning journalists, as champion
athletes, and as exceptional band and choir participants; and
WHEREAS, Student leaders have organized projects that
have involved thousands of hours in community service to local
residents; the members of the staff of Scriptoria have won the
state student newspaper championship title seven years in a row;
student athletes have won numerous district, regional, and state
honors in golf, basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, softball,
swimming, track, and gymnastics; moreover, student musicians and
actors have achieved regional and state recognition for their
exceptional work; and
WHEREAS, The school takes pride in its history of producing
graduates who become successful in their professions and leaders
in their communities; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend J. M. Hanks High School on
its high educational standards and its exceptional success and
extend best wishes for the future to all associated with the
school; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the students, administration, and staff of the school as an
expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
