SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 453
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
at The University of Texas at Austin on the occasion of its
centennial celebration; and
WHEREAS, In 1903, the School of Electrical Engineering
was organized at The University of Texas at Austin with the
curriculum focusing on electrical power systems; the university
and what became the Department of Electrical Engineering in
1910 trained many of the people responsible for creating the
infrastructure that made a diverse economy possible; and
WHEREAS, The department began to include classes on
electronics, communication by radio and television, and
microwave propagation in the 1940s, and the Electrical
Engineering Research Laboratory was established; and
WHEREAS, The researchers at the laboratory focused on
microwave transmission of radio signals and applications of
radar, and their research produced radio telescopes, deemed by
many as one of the most significant American accomplishments of
the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, By the 1960s, the department's curriculum had
expanded to include a wider array of courses on electronics,
power systems and energy conversion, and computer systems; two
older labs merged to create the Applied Research Laboratory,
which has contributed to the development of geodetic positioning
systems, the underwater acoustics used in modern oceanography,
and improved methods of data management, data analysis, and
signal processing; and
WHEREAS, Contributions from individuals, the government,
and industry in the 1970s and 1980s allowed the department to
hire some of the most prestigious names in academia; the faculty
now includes 10 National Academy of Engineering members and
internationally recognized researchers and educators; and
WHEREAS, The department was instrumental in attracting
major technology industries to Austin, and by the 1990s, Texas
had become one of the nation's foremost high technology centers
due in large part to the Electrical and Computer Engineering
Department at The University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, the department has
produced thousands of graduates that have made a dramatic impact
on the state, the nation, and the world, and it is one in which
all Texans can take great pride; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Department of Electrical
and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin for
100 years of extraordinary success and extend best wishes to the
department for even greater success in the coming century as a
premier educational and research institution in this state and
nation; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
