SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 454
In Memory
of
Allen Hardy Sanders
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens of
Colleyville and throughout Tarrant County in mourning the loss of
Allen Hardy Sanders, who died March 8, 2003, at the age of 73; and
WHEREAS, Hardy Sanders was born in Crowell in the Texas
Panhandle; he married Betty Jo Owens on December 3, 1949, and he
served in the United States Army between 1948 and 1953; after
leaving the Army, he began working in the corrugated box industry
and started Bates Container with a partner in 1963; he later
became owner of the successful company; and
WHEREAS, In the 1960s, Mr. Sanders joined the civil rights
movement and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in Dallas;
he was a well-known Democrat and was outspoken about his political
views, as well as civil rights causes; and
WHEREAS, He was a highly respected community leader and was
widely known for his philanthropy and desire to help those less
fortunate; he served as United Way of Tarrant County's annual
campaign chairman in 1999 and was a member of the United Way of
Northeast Tarrant County steering committee for 12 years; and
WHEREAS, The United Way awarded him the prestigious
Hercules Volunteer Award in 1993 for extraordinary leadership
and its top award, the Helping Hands Lifetime Achievement Award,
in 2002; he was also named the Herman J. Smith Man of the Year for
his community work by the Star-Telegram/Northeast in 1994; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mr. Sanders had been a member
of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas since the late 1950s, and
he considered his association with the church a turning point in
his life; and
WHEREAS, A man of exceptional integrity, compassion, and
generosity, Mr. Sanders gave unselfishly of his time to others,
and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten
by those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, Hardy Sanders lived his life to the fullest and
was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of Allen Hardy Sanders: his wife, Betty Jo Owens Sanders;
his sons, Mark Sanders and Stanley Scott Sanders; his daughter,
Marcia Diane Mederos; his sister, Reed Echols; and his six
grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Allen Hardy Sanders.
