SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 456
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated, for
more than 70 years of outstanding service to its members; and
WHEREAS, Organized in May of 1930, at Howard University in
Washington, D.C., the National Pan-Hellenic Council is dedicated
to facilitating the collaborative agenda of its affiliate
organizations; and
WHEREAS, Its charter members were the Kappa Alpha Psi and
Omega Psi Phi fraternities and the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma
Theta, and the Zeta Phi Beta sororities; in the 1930s, the Alpha
Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma fraternities and the Sigma Gamma Rho
Sorority joined the council, and in 1997, the Iota Phi Theta
Fraternity became the ninth member of the organization; in
1937, the organization was incorporated under the laws of the
State of Illinois and became known as the National Pan-Hellenic
Council, Incorporated; and
WHEREAS, Committed to ensuring the success of its member
organizations, the National Pan-Hellenic Council strives to meet
a number of objectives; it helps establish and facilitate local
councils, conducts regional conferences, holds a national
convention and undergraduate leadership conference, and conducts
periodic workshops for local council leaders on operating
procedures; and
WHEREAS, The council contributes to other community groups
by working cooperatively with such organizations as the National
Black Leadership Roundtable, the National Coalition of Black
Voter Participation, the United Negro College Fund, and the
Association of Fraternity Advisors; and
WHEREAS, The National Pan-Hellenic Council has served as a
unifying force for its member fraternities and sororities and has
played a large role in their well-being and successful endeavors;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend the National Pan-Hellenic
Council, Incorporated, for more than 70 years of exceptional
leadership; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for the organization as an expression of esteem from the
Texas Senate.
