SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 458
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Incorporated, on the occasion of its 37th Southwestern Regional Conference, which takes place in Dallas April 4 through 6, 2003; and WHEREAS, A professional organization of women in the field of education, the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Incorporated, was founded in April of 1923, in Jersey City, New Jersey, by Gladys Merritt and seven other teachers; it was officially incorporated in May of 1923; and WHEREAS, Chapters were later established along the east coast and across the United States, as well as in Liberia, West Africa; currently, the organization is comprised of 120 chapters in five regions of our nation and enjoys a membership of 4,000; and WHEREAS, The goals of the sorority are to stimulate the professional growth of teachers, foster a true spirit of sisterhood, promote the highest ideals of the teaching profession, and encourage the development of our youths' potential; and WHEREAS, The members of this inspiring organization uplift their fellow teachers and strive to help children, youths, and adults cope with today's problems while preparing them for tomorrow; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Incorporated, for the devoted service its members have rendered as educators and extend best wishes for a successful conference; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
