SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 463
In Memory
of
Virginia Matthews Law
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Virginia Matthews Law, who
died March 9, 2003, at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, Virginia was born October 22, 1921, in San Antonio
to Lila Alice Combs Matthews and John Larkin Matthews, Sr.; she
graduated from Jefferson High School and earned her bachelor's
degree from The University of Texas, where she was a member of the
Chi Omega Sorority; and
WHEREAS, She was active in numerous civic organizations,
including the Battle of the Flowers Association, the
Military-Civilian Club, the National Society of the Colonial
Dames of America, Friends of the McNay, the San Antonio Country
Club, the History Club, the Monte Vista Garden Club, the Daughters
of the American Revolution, and the Daughters of the Republic of
Texas; she was a charter member of the Assistance League of
San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mrs. Law was a member
of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church for 53 years and served on
Saint Mary's Altar Guild and the Saint Francis Guild; and
WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Mrs. Law gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her wisdom,
warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who
knew her; and
WHEREAS, She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and
she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Virginia Matthews Law: her daughters
and sons-in-law, Nancy Matthews Law, Marian Law and
Foard Townsend, and Eleanor Law and Keith O'Gorman; and her
grandchildren, John Foard Townsend, Franklin Simpson Townsend,
Virginia O'Gorman Dibrell, and Catherine Makepeace O'Gorman;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Virginia Matthews Law.
