SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 467
In Memory
of
Robert Bryan Cox, Sr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of El Paso in mourning the loss of Robert Bryan Cox, Sr., who died March 16, 2003, at the age of 77; and WHEREAS, Bob Cox was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to James Pike Cox and Ruth Cox; he served with distinction during World War II in the 536th Amphibious Tractor Battalion; he drove an amphibious tractor during the first assault wave on five islands in the Pacific Ocean, including Okinawa and Leyte; and WHEREAS, At the age of 23, he entered the restaurant business in Oklahoma City; in 1961, he moved with his family to El Paso and opened the Charcoaler Drive-In Restaurant, a West Side hamburger landmark; his restaurant was noted for its superior food and service, and he became known to many El Pasoans as "Mr. Charcoaler"; and WHEREAS, He served as president of the El Paso Chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association and as state director of the Texas Restaurant Association; he retired in 1992, and his son, Bob Cox, Jr., took over management of the business, but "Mr. Charcoaler" continued to check on the restaurant every day; and WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, Bob Cox gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mr. Cox was an elder in the First Christian Church of El Paso; he loved spending time with his family and friends, golfing, and gardening, and he maintained contact with his colleagues from the military service at reunions of the 536th Battalion; and WHEREAS, Bob Cox lived his life to the fullest and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Robert Bryan Cox, Sr.: his wife of 55 years, Wilma Grace Cox; his children, Sharon Cox, Bob Cox, Jr., Bill and Therese Cox, and Susan and Doug Woodul; his eight grandchildren; his brother, James P. Cox, Jr.; and his brother-in-law, Bud Waggoner; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert Bryan Cox, Sr. Shapleigh ________________________________ President of the Senate I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on March 31, 2003, by a rising vote. ________________________________ Secretary of the Senate ________________________________ Member, Texas Senate
