SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 471
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the City of Weir on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and WHEREAS, Located in Williamson County in Central Texas, Weir was named for Thomas Calvin Weir, a prosperous farmer who was one of the early settlers in the area; and WHEREAS, In the late 19th century, Baptist and Presbyterian congregations met at the Prairie Springs School, and an African American church met in a school near Mankins Crossing; a Methodist church was organized in 1903; and WHEREAS, In 1893, the Georgetown and Granger Railroad came through Weir; in 1903, after the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad bought the line, many area residents moved into Weir, and the town was officially established on or about April 27, 1903; soon afterwards, the Katy Lake Resort attracted tourists to the area, and between 1903 and 1917 Weir thrived, with the opening of four mercantile stores, grocery and drug stores, a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a theatre, two telephone companies, and other establishments; and WHEREAS, The residents of Weir suffered an economic downturn after a flood in 1913 damaged the Katy Lake Resort and the railroad bridge; they also endured hardships brought by a drought in 1917 and 1918, World War I, and the Great Depression; and WHEREAS, By the 1940s, the city began to prosper once again as cotton and later grain became important agricultural products of the farming community; and WHEREAS, The City of Weir incorporated in 1987, and the population grew from a low of 100 in 1970 to 591 in 2001; and WHEREAS, Weir has always been an interesting and colorful town with abundant community spirit, and the residents continue to bring the community together in annual gatherings, such as a street dance in September, a fish fry in April, and a Christmas Parade; in 2003, the city is hosting a centennial celebration with food, a dance, a parade, and the dedication of a Historical Marker; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby congratulate the citizens of Weir on the 100th anniversary of this great Texas town; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the City of Weir as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
