SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 495
In Memory
of
Oscar Martinez Gallegos
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Metairie, Louisiana, in mourning the loss of
Oscar Martinez Gallegos, who died March 30, 2003, at the age
of 75; and
WHEREAS, Oscar Gallegos was born on July 28, 1927, in
Houston, to Jessie S. Gallegos and Ventura M. Alonzo; he grew up
in the Magnolia Park barrio in Houston, where his personality and
talent for telling jokes earned him many lifelong friends who
will dearly miss his presence; and
WHEREAS, At the age of 16, Oscar joined the Merchant
Marines Service and served on the American Eagle during
World War II; he retired from the Merchant Marines after 32 years
of service and spent another 11 years as a member of the Boiler
Marines before retiring to live in Mississippi with his family;
and
WHEREAS, A patriotic American throughout his life,
Oscar Gallegos was a member of the American Legion Post 77 in
Waveland, Mississippi, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, During his retirement years, he spent many hours
enjoying his beloved Mexican and Tejano music and entertaining
his family with his jokes and stories; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Oscar gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom,
warmth, and sense of humor will not be forgotten by those who
knew him; and
WHEREAS, Oscar Gallegos lived his life to the fullest and
was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Oscar Martinez Gallegos: his wife of 58
years, Beatrice T. Gallegos; his sons and daughters-in-law,
Joseph and Ruby Gallegos and Arnold and Karen Gallegos; his
sisters, Minerva Villagomez, Mary Sanchez, Linda Rodriguez,
and Yolanda Lorio; his brothers, George L. Gallegos,
Robert Gallegos, and Alonzo Alonzo; his numerous grandchildren
and great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Oscar Martinez Gallegos.
