SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 496
In Memory
of
David F. Harris, Sr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Galveston and San Antonio in mourning the loss of
the Reverend David F. Harris, Sr., who died February 11, 2003,
at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, David Harris was born November 18, 1919, in
Floresville; he was a Galveston city councilman in the 1970s
and was the first African American to become mayor pro tempore
in the city; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Harris served as pastor of Shiloh
African Methodist Episcopal Church in Galveston and was
president of the board of directors of the Galveston County
Mental Health Association; he was on the board of directors of
the Salvation Army, Saint Vincent's House, and the Galveston
Historical Foundation, Incorporated, and on the advisory board
of the Early Childhood Center; and
WHEREAS, June 13, 1976, was proclaimed David F. Harris Day
in Galveston to honor him for his service to the church and the
community; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
David Harris gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by
those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather,
and great-grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be
treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of the Reverend David F. Harris, Sr.: his wife, Dorothy;
his six children; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
do so in memory of Reverend David F. Harris.
