SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 514
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Honors Day at The University of Texas at Austin, which takes place April 12, 2003; and WHEREAS, First celebrated on April 2, 1949, Honors Day marks the occasion when students who have excelled in scholarship are honored by administrative officials, academic deans, and members of the faculty; the convocation features an academic procession, orange and white honors cords worn by students, heraldic banners, inspirational messages, and celebratory music; in addition, the Main Building Tower will be lighted orange to salute the honorees; and WHEREAS, Students selected for recognition must be currently enrolled in a minimum of nine undergraduate hours unless they are graduating seniors and must have earned a total of 60 college credit hours, with 30 hours earned at the university; students recognized as College Scholars must have a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.9, and students recognized as Distinguished Scholars must have a 4.0 in all their course work at the university; and WHEREAS, This year's Honors Day will recognize 5,270 College Scholars and 487 Distinguished Scholars; they will be represented on that day at the State Capitol by Michael M. Hoffman, a Plan II Honors senior and a 2003 Marshall Scholar and by Alexandra Chirinos, a Plan II Honors senior and a 2002 Truman Scholar and 2003 Mitchell Scholar; and WHEREAS, The students who will be heralded on this special day have distinguished themselves through outstanding academic achievement; their success comes from a combination of intellectual ability, hard work, and serious purpose; and WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to join The University of Texas at Austin in celebrating the many individual victories that brought these students to this important moment of recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Texas Senate, 78th Legislature, hereby commend Honors Day at The University of Texas at Austin as a fitting tribute to these accomplished university students and extend hearty congratulations to all these deserving young people; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this memorable occasion as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
