SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 521
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the parent educators with the Parents as Teachers
program who traveled to the State Capitol to meet with
legislators on March 4, 2003, as part of their annual conference;
and
WHEREAS, The award-winning program is a home and school
partnership designed to give children the best possible start
in life; the program supports parents in their roles as their
child's first and most influential teacher; and
WHEREAS, First established in Texas in 1987 by the Mental
Health Association of Texas, the Parents as Teachers program
includes home visits, group meetings, developmental screening,
and community resources information; and
WHEREAS, Some of the program sites provide child care,
vocational education and job training, transportation, tutoring,
counseling, gang intervention, field trips, training in English
as a Second Language, and General Educational Development
classes; and
WHEREAS, Serving a full range of families from diverse
ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, Parents as Teachers has
grown to include programs in all 50 states and 11 countries, with
over 100 sites in Texas serving approximately 10,000 families;
and
WHEREAS, Education is a priority in Texas, and the Parents
as Teachers program is an excellent example of providing
effective training and services for student success; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend members of the Parents as
Teachers program and applaud their commitment and contributions
to the education of their children; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
