SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 522
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Fourth Annual Mabel Meshachk White-South Dallas
Outreach Center's Relay for Life, which will take place on
April 4, 2003; and
WHEREAS, The Relay for Life is an all-night family event
sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise funds for
cancer research, to increase public awareness of cancer, and to
celebrate those who have survived their battle with cancer; and
WHEREAS, Rolando Blackman, former National Basketball
Association star and currently the assistant coach for the Dallas
Mavericks basketball team, is the chairman of the 2003 Relay for
Life; and
WHEREAS, A formal ceremony with dignitaries in attendance
will begin the evening's event at 7 p.m.; the Luminaria Ceremony
will take place after the sky darkens and will be the highlight of
the evening; and
WHEREAS, Cancer is one of society's most challenging
diseases to overcome, and many health professionals and
organizations are involved in research to combat it; and
WHEREAS, The participants in Relay for Life will come
together to build a strong community spirit and support for the
prevention and treatment of cancer and for the many individuals
whose lives have been affected by this disease; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend the many people who have planned
this important public health event and extend best wishes to them
all for a successful occasion.
