SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 558
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
to join the Texas Association of Counties in recognizing
April 9, 2003, as County Government Day at the Capitol; and
WHEREAS, The week of April 7 through 11, 2003, is being
observed by the National Association of Counties as National
County Government Week to provide the nation's citizens with
an opportunity to honor the many contributions made by county
governments; and
WHEREAS, The oldest form of local government in the
United States, county government addresses many critical issues,
including environmental protection, indigent health care,
special assistance for the elderly, job training, and public
safety; and
WHEREAS, There are 254 counties in Texas, and those
dedicated individuals who serve our counties as elected or
appointed officials not only work diligently to meet the needs
of citizens without placing an undue burden on taxpayers but
also commit themselves to finding solutions to problems that
will benefit all Texans; and
WHEREAS, The Texas Association of Counties encourages
citizens across the state to observe National County Government
Week by learning more about this vital form of local government
and the many ways in which it serves the public; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend the county officials of
this state for their countless contributions to Texas and
welcome members of the Texas Association of Counties to the
State Capitol; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
in honor of the counties and county officials of Texas.
