SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 560
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join
the citizens of Houston in recognizing author and illustrator
Denise Fleming on the occasion of her appearance at the Texas
Library Association's Annual Conference in Houston during the
first week of April, 2003; and
WHEREAS, A native of Toledo, Ohio, Denise Fleming has earned
numerous awards for her work as an author and illustrator; as early
as the third grade, her gift as an artist was recognized when she
was chosen to participate in classes at the Toledo Museum of Art;
after winning several art awards in high school, Denise attended
the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan;
and
WHEREAS, In the 1980s, Denise illustrated children's books
that were written by other authors; after taking classes in
papermaking, she developed her own technique for the distinctive
art of pulp painting, which she uses to illustrate the picture
books she now creates; and
WHEREAS, Denise Fleming has written and illustrated
11 books for children; her first book using pulp painting, In the
Tall, Tall Grass, was published in 1991, and the companion book
published in 1994, In the Small, Small Pond, was a Caldecott
Honor book; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary lady and a highly talented writer
and illustrator, Denise Fleming has contributed extensively to
the enjoyment and education of children and their parents in
Texas and throughout the United States; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Denise Fleming for her
contributions to the arts through her children's books; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
