SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 608
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Mayor Kenneth L. Barr for his many years of distinguished
public service to the people of the City of Fort Worth; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Barr was first elected mayor of Fort Worth
in a special election in May of 1996 after serving as a city
councilman for three years; he was elected to his first full
term in 1997, capturing 81 percent of the vote against three
opponents; he was unopposed in 1999 and was overwhelmingly
reelected in May of 2001; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure, Fort Worth has seen tremendous
economic progress, and Kenneth Barr has taken the lead in
transforming the city from dependence on defense-related
industries to new high technology industries; he has played a
pivotal role in the development of public transportation in the
Fort Worth area, and he is credited with expanding city services
while reducing the city's property tax rate; and
WHEREAS, Ken Barr was educated in the Fort Worth public
schools and graduated from Texas Christian University; since he
was a young man, he has been involved in a wide array of civic,
community, and governmental activities and has earned the
reputation as an inclusive and caring leader; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Barr is the immediate past president of the
Texas Municipal League and a member of the board of directors for
the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and for the National
League of Cities; he is a member of the advisory board of the
United States Conference of Mayors; and
WHEREAS, His future plans include spending more time with
his family's printing business, The Barr Company, which was
started 55 years ago by his father, who also served as mayor of
Fort Worth; over the years, Kenneth Barr's greatest supporters
have been his wife, Karen, and his daughter, Katherine; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary public servant, Mayor Barr has
contributed greatly to the growth of the City of Fort Worth and
to the quality of life it offers, and his accomplishments reflect
his outstanding leadership and his dedication to the betterment
of his community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to Mayor Kenneth L. Barr for
his outstanding service to the people of Fort Worth and extend
best wishes to him for his future endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
