SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 614
In Memory
of
Lillian Dunlap
WHEREAS, The Texas Senate joins the citizens of San Antonio
in mourning the loss of Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap, who
died April 3, 2003, at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, Lillian Dunlap was born in Mission, Texas, to
Ira and Mary Dunlap; she spent her childhood in San Antonio and
graduated from Jefferson High School; she received her nursing
diploma from Santa Rosa Hospital School of Nursing and earned a
bachelor of science degree in nursing in 1953 from Incarnate Word
College and a master's degree in hospital administration from
Baylor University; and
WHEREAS, She entered the United States Army Nurse Corps in
1942 and served in the Pacific Theater throughout World War II;
she was the first Texas woman to earn the rank of general in the
Army and the second female general to head the Army Nurse Corps;
she received numerous awards during her career, including the
Distinguished Service Medal; and
WHEREAS, Lillian's career spanned 33 years and culminated
with her appointment as chief of the Army Nurse Corps; she was a
role model and encouraged nurses to expand their education and
professional development; and
WHEREAS, After her retirement in 1975, she returned to
San Antonio and was very active in the San Antonio community,
serving on several boards of directors; she was a trustee of
Incarnate Word College and was on the Texas Governor's Commission
for Women and the City of San Antonio's Commission for Women; she
was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and she was
a member of the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame and the Texas
Women's Hall of Fame; a founding member of the Army Medical
Department Museum Foundation at Fort Sam Houston, she served as
its president until recently; and
WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Lillian Dunlap gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those
who knew her; she leaves behind memories that will be treasured
forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Lillian Dunlap: her sisters, Dorothy Mount,
Mary Bess Autry, and Carolyn Putnam; and her many nephews and
nieces; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of General Dunlap.
