SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 676
WHEREAS, A distinguished career in education concluded
when Dr. Roberto Zamora retired as superintendent of La Joya
Independent School District on February 28, 2003; and
WHEREAS, Himself a 1964 graduate of La Joya High School,
Dr. Zamora earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from
Pan American College in Edinburg; in 1979, he received his
doctoral degree in educational administration from
The University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Zamora returned to his hometown and joined
La Joya Independent School District in 1980 as principal of
La Joya High School; in 1987, he became superintendent of La Joya
Independent School District; he served with distinction and
merit in this position for five years and again starting in 1997
until his retirement; during his five years away from La Joya
Independent School District, Dr. Zamora served as executive
assistant to the commissioner of education and then as executive
director for the Region One Education Service Center; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Zamora ably led La Joya Independent School
District, one of the state's fastest growing school districts,
which has increased its enrollment from 10,000 to 19,500
students; in August 2001, the district earned a special honor
when the Texas Education Agency named it a "Recognized" school
district; composed of 13 "Exemplary" and "Recognized" schools,
the district also possessed the only Blue Ribbon School in Region
One; and
WHEREAS, Involved with The University of Texas-Pan American
Center for Academic Research Education, he also served as
committee president for the equity center, committee president
for the South Texas Association of Schools, chairman for the Texas
Migrant Council, and member of the La Joya Economic Development
Council; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the field of education, Dr. Zamora
has made numerous noteworthy contributions through his exemplary
leadership, and he truly merits recognition as he embarks on a
new phase of his life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. Roberto Zamora on
his retirement as superintendent of La Joya Independent School
District and extend to him best wishes for future happiness; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for Dr. Zamora as an expression of high regard by the
Texas Senate.
