SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 678
In Memory
of
Jane Lewis Maverick McMillan
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Jane Lewis Maverick McMillan, who died March 21, 2003, at the age of 89; and WHEREAS, A member of a prominent Texas family, Jane Maverick was born October 6, 1913, in San Antonio to Albert Maverick, Jr., and Lillian Williams Maverick; her father was a former Bexar County commissioner; her great-grandfather was Samuel A. Maverick, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence; and her uncle was the late Maury Maverick, a former mayor of San Antonio and member of the United States Congress; and WHEREAS, Jane attended San Antonio Junior College and the University of the Incarnate Word, and she was one of three women to earn a law degree from The University of Texas School of Law in 1936; she married her law school classmate William B. McMillan in 1940; and WHEREAS, Jane practiced law for approximately seven years and worked for the Office of Price Administration during World War II; she later earned her teaching credentials and taught at Coker, Saint Luke's Episcopal, and Laura Steele elementary schools in San Antonio over a 15-year period; and WHEREAS, An exemplary citizen, Jane McMillan was a former president of the San Antonio Bar Auxiliary and was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Boysville Thrift Shop Auxiliary, the Battle of Flowers Association, and the San Antonio Conservation Society; and WHEREAS, In the late 1950s, Jane helped to create "anticuchos," the cubed sirloin beef tips on a stick that became a popular snack for the city's Fiesta celebration at a "Night In Old San Antonio"; and WHEREAS, A woman of great energy, spirit, and creativity, Jane always followed her dreams, including attending law school at a time when most women were discouraged from having careers; and WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Jane was a member of Saint Mark's and Christ Episcopal churches; and WHEREAS, Jane McMillan lived her life to the fullest and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Jane Lewis Maverick McMillan: her daughter and son-in-law, Mary McMillan Fisher and Lewis F. Fisher; her grandson, William M. Fisher, and his wife, Mariana M. Fisher; her grandson, Maverick F. Fisher; her sister, Lillian Padgitt; her brother, Albert Maverick III; and numerous nieces and nephews; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jane Lewis Maverick McMillan.
