SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 679
In Memory
of
George Allen Carver
WHEREAS, The Texas Senate joins the citizens of San Antonio
in mourning the loss of Major General George Allen Carver, who
died January 31, 2003, at the age of 93; and
WHEREAS, George Carver was born in Rome, Georgia, and was
raised on a farm with eight sisters and one brother; he excelled
in academics, football, and track and received a congressional
appointment to the United States Military Academy, West Point,
from which he graduated in 1933; and
WHEREAS, He enjoyed a happy marriage of nearly 66 years to
Barbara Ellen Bristol Carver, and the couple was blessed with two
children; and
WHEREAS, George began his army career with the mounted
artillery units and went on to serve his country with distinction
for many years, ultimately earning the rank of major general; and
WHEREAS, General Carver was a field artillery commander
under General George Patton during World War II; following the
war, he was town commander in Wels, Austria, and assistant
inspector general in Vienna, Austria; his numerous other
assignments included serving as commanding officer for the
2nd Guided Missile Group at Fort Bliss, Texas, as commanding
general for the 7th Infantry Division Artillery in Korea, and as
commanding general for the Army in Alaska; and
WHEREAS, Following his retirement from the military in
1966, General Carver served for 10 years as director of Army
Emergency Relief, a fund to assist military members and their
families in meeting a wide array of needs, such as living,
medical, and funeral expenses; and
WHEREAS, For distinguishing himself during his military
service, General Carver was awarded the Distinguished Service
Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal with
Oak Leaf Cluster; he also earned the Distinguished Service
Citation twice from the Reserve Officers Association; he
received the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal for directing
the Army Emergency Relief fund; and
WHEREAS, A man of many talents and interests and an
outdoors enthusiast, General Carver was a horseman and polo
player as a young man, and he loved tennis, golf, hunting, and
fishing; and
WHEREAS, George Carver lived his life to the fullest and
was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
the bereaved family of George Allen Carver: his wife,
Barbara Ellen Bristol Carver; his daughter, Barbara Schneider;
his son and daughter-in-law, George Allen Carver, Jr., and
Joan Page Carver; his six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren;
and his sister, Joy Vee Williamson; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of George Allen Carver.
