SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 682
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens throughout the nation in recognizing May 1, 2003, as Law Day; and WHEREAS, One of this nation's greatest strengths is its commitment to a just legal system and the protection it affords to the rights and freedoms we cherish; Law Day is observed to draw attention to the principles of justice and the practice of law; and WHEREAS, The Constitution adopted by the citizens of Texas on February 15, 1876, recognized the essential principles of liberty and free government; it further embraced the belief in equality for all under the law and entrusted the protection of that equality to an independent judiciary; and WHEREAS, Law Day was first established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to strengthen our country's heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under the law; in 1961, by a joint resolution of Congress, May 1st was designated as the official date for celebrating Law Day in the nation; and WHEREAS, This year's Law Day theme is "Celebrate Your Freedom: Independent Courts Protect Our Liberties"; the courts enforce the Constitution, protect our rights as Americans, and make the rule of law a reality, a reality we strive to share with others throughout the world; and WHEREAS, Citizens across Texas are encouraged to observe Law Day through activities, such as those of Team Lackland, the partnership composed of the 59th Medical Wing, the 37th Training Wing, and the 67th Information Operations Wing, United States Air Force, whose members have united to bring to Texans a more thorough understanding of the law and its applications; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby recognize May 1, 2003, as Law Day in Texas and encourage all citizens to celebrate the day with appropriate ceremonies; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a memento of this occasion.
