SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 705
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join the Hispanic Contractors Association of DFW in recognizing
May 1 through May 5, 2003, as Safety Awareness Week for
Construction Workers; and
WHEREAS, Every day 16 workers die in this country, and
many more become injured or ill; the construction industry ranks
highest in terms of fatalities, and the death rate among Hispanic
construction workers is disproportionately high; the fatality
rate for Hispanics working in the construction industry rose to
6.1 for every 100,000 workers in 2001 from 5.3 for every 100,000
workers in 1992; and
WHEREAS, The Hispanic Contractors Association of DFW
supports efforts to make the construction workplace safer and
to that end promotes a Safety Awareness Week for Construction
Workers in our state; and
WHEREAS, The Occupational Safety and Health Administration
of the United States Department of Labor is also committed to
making the workplace safer and healthier for all Americans; and
WHEREAS, On April 28, 2003, Worker Memorial Day, a day
that recognizes and remembers those workers who lost their lives
on the job, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
launched a national campaign to lower workplace fatalities among
Spanish-speaking workers by releasing announcements to over 650
Spanish radio stations; and
WHEREAS, Ensuring a safe and healthy work environment adds
value to businesses and workplaces, and public awareness of the
issues and dangers faced by construction workers could help save
the lives of citizens of our state and nation; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend the Hispanic Contractors
Association of DFW for furthering endeavors to educate all
Texans about job safety and encourage all Texans to observe
Safety Awareness Week for Construction Workers; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
honor of those dedicated to protecting the health and safety of
Texas workers.
