SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 728
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program at Thomas Jefferson Intermediate School in the Beeville Independent School District; and WHEREAS, The Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program strives to foster self-esteem, leadership skills and a desire to pursue education by providing the participants with important information and support services to reach their goals; and WHEREAS, The 16 fifth-grade and sixth-grade students involved in the Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program were recommended for participation by their classroom teachers; the students and their mothers attend workshops each Saturday morning from November through May; at these gatherings, motivational speakers make presentations on goal setting, self-esteem, peer pressure, careers and study skills; in addition, each girl is assigned a mentor from the professional community; and WHEREAS, At the conclusion of the school year, the Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program participants take a field trip to Austin, where they attend several educational and cultural events; and WHEREAS, This valuable program is an innovative project which undoubtedly helps young women to reach their highest aspirations; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend the teachers and staff of Thomas Jefferson Intermediate School for sponsoring the Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program and extend to them and to the program's participants best wishes for much future success.
