SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 753
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Houston East End Lions Club on the occasion of its
75th anniversary, which is being celebrated on May 28, 2003; and
WHEREAS, The Lions Club is a worldwide volunteer
organization of nearly 1.4 million members, who are dedicated
to leadership development through community service, and who
undertake numerous projects to help the needy; much of the
emphasis of their work centers on the prevention of blindness,
drug abuse prevention, and diabetes awareness; and
WHEREAS, The Houston East End Lions Club was chartered on
May 10, 1928, by a group of caring citizens who wanted to help the
less fortunate in their community; organized at the start of
the Great Depression, club members faced great need and few
resources, but the club survived because of the perseverance of
its dedicated members; and
WHEREAS, Maintaining the club during World War II was a
challenge, as many members were away serving their country and
money was scarce; over the years, however, the club flourished
and has carried out many projects to raise funds and to help other
organizations; it has collected funds for hurricane victims and
has supported Boy Scout troops; its projects have included sales
of a wide array of items from light bulbs to turkeys, and it has
sponsored auctions, bingo parties, carnivals, and
gift-collection drives; and
WHEREAS, In the early 1980s, a volunteer worker in local
elementary schools pointed out the need of poor children for eye
care; some members of the club spearheaded a program to help
those children, and the club became committed to its outstanding
service in the field of eye care, for which it is now noted; and
WHEREAS, Members of the East End Lions Club have been
generous supporters of Eyes of Texas Eye Bank, the Leader Dog
Program, the Lighthouse for the Blind, the Lions Diabetic Camp,
the Boy Scouts, the Salvation Army, and numerous other programs,
scholarships, and charitable causes; and
WHEREAS, The Houston East End Lions Club has made countless
contributions to the improvement of its community and the betterment
of the citizens of Houston, and it deserves legislative recognition
on the occasion of its anniversary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby congratulate members of the Houston
East End Lions Club on its 75th anniversary and extend best
wishes to all for continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
