SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 763
WHEREAS, On August 15, 2002, Robert and Mary Sue Gottschall of Victoria celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, and this occasion provided a fitting opportunity to reflect on their lives and enduring relationship; and WHEREAS, Born in Mangum, Oklahoma, in 1918, Mary Sue Mills excelled at the piano from an early age, performing her first recital at age eight; a woman of many talents, she also prospered in her studies, graduating valedictorian of her high school and earning a scholarship to Oklahoma University; and WHEREAS, A true Texan, Robert Gottschall was born in Dallas in 1915; his activity in the local theater scene caught the attention of Hollywood, and he soon found his way onto the big screen in such movies as The Grapes of Wrath, in which his character mistakenly informs a friend, "All them Okies is hard-lookin'."; and WHEREAS, When America entered World War II, Mr. Gottschall enlisted and received training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where Mary Sue was employed; spotting a beauty that put all the red carpet starlets to shame, Robert declared to a nearby officer, "You see that woman over there? I'm gonna marry her."; and WHEREAS, After sweeping each other off their feet to a Benny Goodman record on their first date, the couple later exchanged vows in Asbury Park Methodist Church and began a long, happy journey that has taken them around the world and blessed them with many memories and recognitions; and WHEREAS, After the war, the couple returned to Robert's Beverly Hills home so that he could continue his movie contract; he was recalled to the Army in 1948 and remained in service until his retirement in 1963; the family spent time stationed in such places as Japan and Taiwan, where Robert introduced Little League baseball; and WHEREAS, This loving couple has watched their three children, Robert Byron, Mark, and Nancy, grow and inherit their parents' artistic talents; their family has now grown to include six grandchildren, Joseph "Geno", Ari, Michael, Ariel, Josh, and Ashley; and WHEREAS, Robert and Mary Sue have been blessed with 60 wonderful years together, a large and loving family, and friends the world over, and it is a privilege for the Texas Senate to join others in honoring them on the occasion of their anniversary; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere congratulations to Robert and Mary Sue Gottschall on their 60th wedding anniversary and wish them much happiness as they continue their journey together; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Gottschall as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
