SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 768
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in recognizing the San Angelo Colts Baseball Club, which has won the first championship title of the newly formed Central Baseball League; and WHEREAS, The San Angelo Colts returned professional baseball to the San Angelo community after a 43-year absence; the team was organized and purchased in the spring of 1999 by Dr. Robert K. Hegglund and Harlan L. Bruha, both of Angelo State University; the two purchased a sanctioned team, leased land from The Texas State University System, and built a stadium; and WHEREAS, The newly formed team first played in the Texas-Louisiana Professional Baseball League in 2000, and after 69 wins and 43 losses it was defeated in the first round of the playoffs; in 2001, the Colts won 49 games, lost 47 games, and lost the championship series to the Edinburg Roadrunners; and WHEREAS, The Texas-Louisiana league was reorganized in 2002 to include the former league members, Amarillo, Edinburg, Rio Grande, San Angelo, Springfield, Missouri, and Alexandria, Louisiana, and additional teams from Fort Worth and Jackson, Mississippi, to form the new eight-member Central Baseball League; and WHEREAS, During the regular season in 2002, the Colts compiled a 50-46 record and defeated Edinburg 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs; the Colts defeated the Jackson Senators with a 3-2 victory in the championship series to bring the first professional sports championship home to San Angelo in 45 years; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby commend the San Angelo Colts Baseball Club and its owners for bringing professional baseball back to San Angelo and congratulate them on winning the Central Baseball League championship title; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them as a memento of this special accomplishment.
