SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 794
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize April 7 through April 11, 2003, as Public Health Week;
and
WHEREAS, Every day the people of Texas benefit from the
efforts of the public health workforce as they eat in
restaurants, consume retail foods processed in Texas, drink
tap water, learn about the prevention of deadly diseases, and
receive vaccinations; and
WHEREAS, Texas has a long history of public health
successes, such as wiping out yellow fever and polio and
extending the life span of the average Texan by 25 years; and
WHEREAS, The efforts of public health workers to protect
the public have grown in significance due to the new threats of
terrorism; and
WHEREAS, The experience of public health workers in
managing natural disease outbreaks, combined with effective
planning and partnerships among federal, state, and local
authorities, will assist the state in dealing with any future
crisis; and
WHEREAS, Public health officials can reach the goal of a
healthier Texas only through the cooperation of communities and
individuals; and
WHEREAS, All Texans must take personal responsibility for
improving our health; responsible behaviors include avoiding the
use of tobacco, engaging in regular, safe exercise, and eating
more fruits and vegetables; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend public health workers for
improving the lives of Texans and encourage all our citizens
to observe Public Health Week; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
honor of Public Health Week, 2003.
