SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 822
	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to  
recognize Manuel Berriozabal for receiving the 2003 President's 
Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in University 
Service at The University of Texas at San Antonio; and
	WHEREAS, This award recognizes Dr. Berriozabal for his 
dedication to the discipline of mathematics in the university 
setting; he generously shares his mastery of mathematics with 
students through innovative classroom methods while continuing 
to explore abstract mathematical properties such as limits and 
continuity in his research; and
	WHEREAS, Manuel Berriozabal earned his bachelor's degree 
in mathematics in 1952 at Rockhurst College in Missouri; he 
continued his studies, which were interrupted by a tour in the 
United States Army, at Notre Dame University and completed his 
master's degree in 1956; he was awarded his doctorate by the 
University of California at Los Angeles in 1961; and 
	WHEREAS, Dr. Berriozabal taught at the University of 
California, Tulane University, and the University of New Orleans
before he joined the faculty at The University of Texas at
San Antonio in 1976; and
	WHEREAS, Manuel Berriozabal founded the innovative and 
widely acclaimed Prefreshman Engineering Program at the 
university, an academic enrichment program designed to assist 
middle and high school students, especially minority and women 
students, to achieve a higher level of competence in mathematics 
and science; he was inducted into the Texas Science Hall of Fame 
in 2000 and was awarded the Yueh-Gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu 
Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics, the most 
prestigious award of the Mathematical Association of America,
in 2001; and
	WHEREAS, A visionary teacher, Dr. Berriozabal has earned 
the respect and admiration of his colleagues; many students in 
this state and throughout the nation have benefited from his 
enthusiastic teaching of mathematics; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Manuel Berriozabal for his 
exceptional achievements in mathematics at The University of Texas
at San Antonio and congratulate him on receiving the 2003
President's Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in 
University Service; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
him as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
