SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 836
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Karen Wheeler-Hall, first place winner of the Texas
Medical Association's 2002 Excellence in Science Teaching
statewide competition; and
WHEREAS, The award, created by the Texas Medical Association
in 1990, honors science teachers who exude enlightenment, energy,
and enthusiasm in the classroom and cultivate student interest in
medicine and science; winners must also demonstrate innovative
teaching methods and professional growth and have the endorsement
of their peers; and
WHEREAS, Karen, who teaches integrated physics and chemistry
at La Porte High School, won the award for her lesson plan, "Building
a Roller Coaster"; the lesson plan called for her students to build
a miniature track and then calculate the speed, momentum, and
acceleration of a roller coaster, which was represented by a
marble; and
WHEREAS, She has credited her lesson plan with enticing
students who are not ordinarily interested in science to enroll
in her class and to later take other physics classes; and
WHEREAS, The creativity that Karen Wheeler-Hall brings to
the classroom is one of the greatest gifts a student can ever
receive, and all Texans should be proud of her ability to inspire
students to become curious and enthusiastic learners; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Karen Wheeler-Hall on earning
this prestigious award and extend best wishes to her for the
future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
