SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 890
In Memory
of
Betty Sue Shelton Sawyer
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Hillsboro in mourning the loss of Betty Sue Shelton Sawyer,
who died April 22, 2003, at the age of 68; and
WHEREAS, Betty Sue was born in Chapman Ranch on
September 10, 1934, to Cora Jowell and Clifton Durwood Shelton;
she married G. Ray Sawyer in June of 1957, and the couple raised
their three children in a wonderful, loving environment on their
family farm; and
WHEREAS, She earned a bachelor of science degree in
elementary education from North Texas State University, where
she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority; and
WHEREAS, Betty Sue pursued her passion for children's
education by teaching elementary school in Fort Worth and
Hillsboro; she also helped create and operate Sawyer Farms,
the family business, and in recent years she owned and operated
Canterberry's, an antique, tableware, and gift store in
Hillsboro; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary member of her community, Betty Sue
was active in many educational and civic organizations,
including the Philotechnos Club and the Hillsboro Heritage
League, and she was a past president and a life member of the
Sesame Club, a women's service organization; in 2000, she
established the G. Ray Sawyer Memorial Scholarship Fund for
Hill County students attending Texas A&M University; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Betty Sue had been a member
since 1968 of the First Baptist Church of Hillsboro, where she
established the children's choir, participated in the sanctuary
choir, and was involved in the restoration of the church's pipe
organ; and
WHEREAS, Betty Sue Shelton Sawyer was a devoted wife,
mother, and grandmother, and she leaves behind memories that
will be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Betty Sue Shelton Sawyer: her children and
their spouses, John Ray Sawyer and Natasha, Lisa Sawyer Feather
and Robert, and Joel Timothy Sawyer and Julie; and her six
grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Betty Sue Shelton Sawyer.
