SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 892
In Memory
of
Malcolm McGregor
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of El Paso and Texans across the state in mourning the
loss of Malcolm McGregor, who died May 12, 2003, at the age of
74; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong El Pasoan, Malcolm McGregor was
born on January 22, 1929, to Malcolm McGregor, Sr., and
Margaret Phillips McGregor; the McGregors were prominent
citizens and property owners whose former ranch is now the
McGregor Range, a large part of the Fort Bliss military
reservation in El Paso; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm earned a bachelor's degree in science from
Texas A&M University and a degree from The University of Texas
School of Law; he served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the
United States Army as a paratrooper from 1951 to 1953, achieving
the rank of second lieutenant; in 1957, he married Bobba Hadlock,
who preceded him in death in 1972; and
WHEREAS, He began his lifelong love affair with politics
when he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in
1954, three years before he graduated from law school; he served
as a representative for 10 years and cosponsored legislation that
became the pilot program for the Head Start program; and
WHEREAS, In the 1960s he practiced law, and he opened his
own law practice in 1971; he was a delegate to the 1968 Democratic
Convention in Chicago, and shortly thereafter, he bought his
first airplane, an open cockpit Stearman; flying soon became his
passion, leading him to fly many cross-country trips throughout
the rest of his life; and
WHEREAS, Mr. McGregor was an avid reader and counted
among his friends such authors as Gary Cartwright, Larry King,
Cormac McCarthy, and Willie Morris, who featured him in a book
about Texas politics in the 1950s; in political circles he was
friends with former Governor Ann Richards, El Paso Mayor
Ray Caballero, former Lieutenant Governor Bill Hobby, and former
Speaker of the House Jim Wright; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Malcolm McGregor gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those
who knew him; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm McGregor lived his life to the fullest and
was a devoted father and brother, and he leaves behind memories
that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Malcolm McGregor: his sons, Malcolm McGregor III
and Robertson Hadlock McGregor; and his sister, Jean McGregor Jacobs;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Malcolm McGregor.
