SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 898
In Memory
of
Harriett Maud James
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Winnsboro in mourning the loss of Harriett Maud James, who died
April 22, 2003, at the age of 94; and
WHEREAS, Maud was born in Hatfield, England, on April 2, 1909,
to James and Eva Bennington Morris; and
WHEREAS, She studied nursing at Lincoln Hospital, and she
met her future husband, Dr. Norman R. James, in Lincolnshire,
England, where he was studying ophthalmology; they were married
in 1938, and the couple was blessed with a family of four
children; and
WHEREAS, Maud worked as a medical and surgical nurse, and
she served as a midwife to women living in the poor sections of
Birmingham, England, during World War II; and
WHEREAS, She moved with her family to Australia and later
to Dallas, where she taught in a Dallas preschool; in the 1970s,
she and her husband moved to Winnsboro, where she was a founding
member of Saint Frances Episcopal Church; and
WHEREAS, Maud shared with her family stories of her life in
England during World War II; for instance, she recalled sending
her first son, Karl, off to school each day carrying his lunch
as well as a gas mask to protect him from harm; her second son,
Johann, was born in a bomb shelter; and
WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Maud gave unselfishly of her time to others and always put the
needs of others first; when her late husband was in a nursing
home, she spent time visiting other patients and helping them in
any way she could; and
WHEREAS, Maud loved to knit and garden, and she especially
took pleasure in raising African Violets; and
WHEREAS, Maud James lived her life to the fullest and was
a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she leaves behind
memories that will be treasured forever by her family and many
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
the bereaved family of Harriett Maud James: her sons and
daughters-in-law, Karl James and Eugenia, Dr. Pete James
and Lynn, and Johann James; her daughter and son-in-law,
Marguerita Chapman and the Reverend Jerry Chapman; her
grandchildren, Lisa, Norman, Marsha, James, Allison, and Casey;
and her five great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Harriett Maud James.
