SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 923
In Memory
of
John E. Riley
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of La Porte in mourning the loss of John E. Riley, who died
April 17, 2003, at the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, Jack Riley was born in Trenton, Missouri, on
February 8, 1925; after graduating from high school, he served
in the United States Navy during World War II; he earned a
bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas in 1948; and
WHEREAS, After college, Jack worked for newspapers in
Kansas and Missouri and was employed by General Dynamics; and
WHEREAS, In 1959, he took a position with the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration, where he spent 33 years
in the public affairs department; he was the NASA spokesman who
provided commentary during the first moon walk, in 1969; and
WHEREAS, A man who dearly loved his work, Jack was
especially proud of his involvement with the Apollo 13 mission,
for which he carried major responsibilities; he was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role in the mission; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Jack gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom,
warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who
knew him; and
WHEREAS, Jack Riley lived his life to the fullest and was
a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind
memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of John E. Riley: his wife, Pat Riley; his sons,
Kevin, Sean, and Brian Riley; his daughter, Kerry Regan; his
sister, Joanne Montgomery; and his 12 grandchildren; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of John E. Riley.
