SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 951
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Justin Elementary School Aeronautics and Space
Administration team for winning the Best Overall award in the
Planetary Explorers Design Challenge international competition;
and
WHEREAS, The group of eight young scientists, better known
as Team JASA, used their ingenuity and creativity to win the
award in a contest sponsored by the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration and the Lockheed Martin Corporation; the
contest was initiated to promote interest in engineering and
science among elementary and middle school students; and
WHEREAS, Team JASA created JATOM 1, the Justin Fourth
Graders Awesome Trip Observing Mars, as their entry; the team
designed and built a working model aircraft that could fly on
both Earth and Mars; the students spent six months carrying out
innumerable investigations, performing over 60 flight tests, and
writing and illustrating a fictional story about their
spacecraft; and
WHEREAS, On May 1, 2003, Team JASA traveled to Washington, D.C.,
to attend the national Space Day activities and to accept the award
from astronaut John Glenn; and
WHEREAS, By designing and building JATOM 1, the eight
members of Team JASA have displayed much talent and creativity,
and they and their first-rate project are a source of much pride
to their school, community, and state; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to the members
of Team JASA for winning the Best Overall award in this
prestigious international competition; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for the members of the team as an expression of esteem from the
Texas Senate.
