SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 954
WHEREAS, Fifty years ago, Lola and Willie Smith made a
lifetime commitment to each other, and their mutual trust has
been amply rewarded, for they recently celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Smith were married on September 22, 1952,
in Jasper; and
WHEREAS, The world has changed considerably during the years
of their marriage, yet Mr. and Mrs. Smith have cherished traditional
family and moral values; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, they have grown stronger in their
love and devotion as together they have experienced the joys and
sorrows of everyday living; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Smith are beloved and respected by
their children, Randa Smith, Malcolm Smith, and Felita McDuffie,
and their two grandchildren, Jaylyn and Jourdan McDuffie; and
WHEREAS, Willie retired from the Louisiana Pacific
Corporation as dry kiln foreman after 41 years of service, and Lola
retired from the Jasper Independent School District as a teacher's
aide after 11 years of service; dedicated to community service,
Willie is a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and Lola is a volunteer
at Jasper Christus Hospital; they also share the fruits of their
hobbies with others; Willie is a gardener who distributes his
harvest among family and friends; Lola sews and cooks and enjoys
baking cakes for her family and friends on their birthdays; and
WHEREAS, They are both active and devoted members of the
Greater New Bethel Baptist Church of Jasper; Willie serves as the
chairman of the Deacon Board and as general superintendent of the
Sunday school; Lola serves on the Deaconess Board; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Smith celebrated their anniversary
with their family and friends at a reception hosted by their
family on September 22, 2002, at the First National Bank
Community Room in Jasper; and
WHEREAS, The loving relationship that Willie and Lola
share is truly an inspiration to all who know them; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere congratulations to
Mr. and Mrs. Smith on their 50th wedding anniversary; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
Mr. and Mrs. Smith as a memento of this special day.
