SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 988
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Tony "T.C." Castillo, who is retiring from the Austin
Independent School District after 34 years of loyal service in
the field of education; and
WHEREAS, Tony Castillo is a 1961 graduate of Johnston
High School and a 1969 graduate of The University of Texas; he
worked for 32 years as a teacher and coach at Johnston High School
and for two years at Akins High School; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his career as a teacher of geography,
government, and American and United States history, T.C. was a
dedicated and resourceful educator and earned Teacher of the Year
awards for 1981, 1982, 1985, and 2001; and
WHEREAS, He was also named District and Central Texas Coach
of the Year on numerous occasions; he led his boys basketball
teams to seven district championships and the girls softball team
to a 2000 district championship; and
WHEREAS, An active member of his community, T.C. is
involved with the East Austin Optimist Club and Friends of
East Austin, and he serves on the advisory boards for Austin
Parks and Recreation Department and Pan American Recreation
Center; and
WHEREAS, He is chairman of the Coors Education Grant
Committee and serves on the committee for the Gordon A. Bailey
Scholarship Fund; he generously gives of his time and energy to
coaching in little leagues and youth clinics; and
WHEREAS, He has been married for 41 years to the former
Berniece Ruiz, and the couple has two sons, Rodney and Derek,
and three grandchildren, Mariana, Xavier, and Jared; and
WHEREAS, T.C. Castillo has been a positive influence on the
lives of countless students and has distinguished himself in his
profession, and his presence in the Austin Independent School
District will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend Tony Castillo for his many
contributions to the Austin Independent School District and
extend best wishes to him for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
