SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 991
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Austin Community College on the special occasion of
its 30th anniversary this year; and
WHEREAS, Austin Community College was established in
December of 1972 by the Austin Independent School District
Board of Trustees to meet the growing need for access to higher
education for the underserved citizens in the area; the college
opened its doors to students in September of 1973; and
WHEREAS, In 1978, the community college received full
accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees;
it established its own governing board in 1982, and today it is
one of the largest community colleges in Texas; and
WHEREAS, Austin Community College is an integral part of
Austin and the Central Texas area; its mission is to provide
general education or university transfer courses, workforce
programs, customized training for businesses, continuing
education, and developmental education at any of the six main
campuses and nine distance learning centers, or through its
telecommunications programs; and
WHEREAS, Education is a priority in Texas, and Austin
Community College is a vital educational resource to area
citizens and has a strong impact on the economic growth of Austin
and the surrounding communities; under the guidelines of its
governing board and its president, Dr. Richard Fonte, it
continues to meet the needs of a growing community; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend members of the community of
Austin Community College for the tremendous contributions they
have made to the betterment of Austin and Central Texas and
extend congratulations to them on the occasion of the college's
30th anniversary; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
