SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 999
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Boynton Chapel United Methodist Church on the occasion
of its Fourth Annual Third Ward Teen Symposium, which was held on
May 17, 2003; and
WHEREAS, The goal of the symposium was to encourage young
people between the ages of 12 and 19 to follow positive lifestyles
through educational and motivational programs; and
WHEREAS, With the theme of "Teens Changing Their Pathways,
Steering Toward Faith, Hope, Purpose, and Love," seminars and
workshops were held on such topics as faith as a journey, spiritual
gifts, the power of God, teen sexuality, peer pressure, crime
prevention, and substance abuse; and
WHEREAS, The young people were given guidance in preparing
for a career and college and were entertained by praise dancers,
Christian rappers, singers, and drama performances; and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership and guidance of youth
project director Margaret Scott and pastor Wanda Bess, the teen
symposium was an excellent way to reach out to the youth in the
Third Ward and across the City of Houston, and it undoubtedly
had a positive effect on those who participated; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby commend the Boynton Chapel United
Methodist Church for its efforts to provide guidance and
assistance to the young people of Houston; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
Boynton Chapel United Methodist Church as an expression of high
regard from the Texas Senate.
