SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1002
In Memory
of
Patricia Johnson Smith
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Patricia Johnson Smith, who died February 16, 2003, at the age of 65; and WHEREAS, Patricia was born June 24, 1937, in Austin, to Robert and Margaret Winke Johnson; and WHEREAS, Patricia began her career as a state employee in March of 1976; for nearly three years, she served as an administrative assistant to Judge Joe E. Dibrell in the Office of the Attorney General; she then worked for 18 years for Texas Senate Staff Services; and WHEREAS, Patricia was a diligent and valued employee who truly loved her work in the Texas Senate; she advanced from ADP operator I to administrative technician, doing data entry for all 31 senators and all committee staffs; she became the lead operator on the IBM 5520 Word Processing System, and she assisted the calendar clerk in preparing the Intent Calendar and the Local and Uncontested Calendar; she retired from state employment in June of 1997; and WHEREAS, Following her retirement, Patricia returned to work for Senate Staff Services during the 76th Legislature and for an additional few months during the interim; and WHEREAS, Patricia was highly respected by her colleagues for her efficiency and professionalism, and she inspired others with her dependability, her loyalty, and her exemplary conduct; and WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity, Patricia gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and WHEREAS, Patricia was a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister, and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Patricia Johnson Smith: her daughters, Janet Harkins and Karen Beabout; her seven grandchildren and her six great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Janet Fritche, Nina Pearson, Jackie Davis, and Roberta Seay; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Patricia Johnson Smith.
