SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1018
In Memory
of
Herbert William Vilim
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Herbert William Vilim, who died May 7, 2003, at the age of 83; and WHEREAS, Herbert Vilim was born April 5, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, to Herbert and Loretta Stapleton Vilim; he earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, and a master's degree in education from Our Lady of the Lake University; and WHEREAS, Mr. Vilim served in the United States Army during World War II and was retired after many years of teaching and working in insurance sales; founder of the Herb Vilim Insurance Agency, his career also included serving as a district manager for American United Life Insurance Company and as a speech instructor in the Saint Mary's University Adult Education Department; and WHEREAS, A well-known civic leader, he was a member of the Catholic Interracial Council, the Toastmasters Club, Meals on Wheels, and the Bexar County Czech Heritage Society; he was a Republican Party precinct chairman for over 25 years; and WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Herb Vilim was guided by his profound faith; a devout Christian, he attended Mass daily, and he was a member of the Order of the Alhambra, the Oblate Associates, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, and the San Antonio Liederkranz; and WHEREAS, Herb had a generous spirit and an Irish gift of gab that enriched the lives of everyone he met; noted for his friendliness and engaging personality, Herb was also a kind and gentle man who gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, Herb Vilim lived his life to the fullest and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Herbert William Vilim: his wife of 52 years, Aileen Vanderhider Vilim; his children, Patrick, Loretta, Margaret, Mary Ann, Michael, and Jeanne Vilim and Kathleen Vilim DaGroomes, and her husband, Thomaz; his two grandchildren, Ashley and Jacqueline Artis; and his sister, Jeanne Fansher; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Herbert William Vilim.
