SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1019
In Memory
of
Dr. John M. Smith, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Dr. John M. Smith, Jr., who
died March 16, 2003, at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, John Smith was born June 14, 1914, in Burleson County;
he graduated from North Texas State University; after earning a
degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1940, he
undertook two years of post-graduate medical training; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Smith enlisted in the United States Army
Medical Corps in 1942 and served as a surgeon during World War II;
after he was honorably discharged in 1946, he married Jane Jordan;
the couple moved to El Paso and later to San Antonio, where Dr. Smith
established his medical practice; and
WHEREAS, Known for his attentiveness and compassionate
nature, he was a revered physician to a multitude of patients,
from the poorest to the most privileged of the community, for
more than 55 years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Smith took great pride in playing a major role
in establishing the City of San Antonio as a leading medical
center in the state; it was largely due to his efforts that in
1959 the Texas Legislature authorized the establishment of the
University of Texas South Texas Medical School, now known as
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; he
was also instrumental in the creation of Methodist Hospital, the
Cancer Therapy and Research Center, University Hospital and
other facilities; and
WHEREAS, Greatly respected by his colleagues and by the
citizens of San Antonio, Dr. Smith served as president or
chairman of such organizations as the Texas State Board of
Health, the Bexar County Medical Society, and the San Antonio
Medical Foundation; and
WHEREAS, For his outstanding contributions to the field of
medicine, he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award
from the American Medical Association, the C. D. Taylor Award
from Tulane University Medical School, and the Distinguished
Alumnus Award from North Texas State University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. John Smith was a devoted husband, father,
and grandfather who lived his life to the fullest, and he leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
the bereaved family of Dr. John M. Smith, Jr.: his sons,
Dr. J. Marvin Smith III, Dr. Paxton Jordan Smith, and
Robert Burleson Smith; his daughter, Joella Pickering Smith;
his brother, J. Burleson Smith; his nine grandchildren; and his
numerous nieces and nephews; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Dr. John M. Smith, Jr.
