SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1060
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay tribute to Corma Mathilda Etzel on the grand occasion of her 100th birthday; and WHEREAS, Corma was born on August 16, 1903, in Old Dime Box to Herman and Emma Etzel and is the only survivor of 12 children; she married Manly Burttschell on August 20, 1927, and they lived in Egypt, Texas, until his death in 1935; and WHEREAS, Corma then moved to Giddings, where she held many jobs to support her three small children; her varied occupations included taking in roomers and boarders, doing laundry, and working in a five-and-dime store; and WHEREAS, In 1940, she married Awalt Winters, and the couple lived on several farms before moving to South Leon Street in Giddings, where she still owns a home; she started the first school cafeteria in Giddings and retired after working there for 23 years; Mr. Winters died in 1980; and WHEREAS, For the past nine years, Corma has resided in the Giddings Health Center; a devout Christian, she has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than 70 years; and WHEREAS, She is beloved and respected by her children, Frank and Lucille Burttschell, Douglas and Judy Winters, Helen and Carroll David, Howard and Marie Burttschell, and Bobby and Gloria Winters, her 15 grandchildren, her 32 great-grandchildren, and her five great-great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Etzel is an esteemed member of her community and is noted for her courage, her compassion for others, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, hereby recognize Corma Mathilda Etzel as a treasured citizen of the State of Texas and extend best wishes to her on her 100th birthday; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as a memento of this special day.
