SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1064
In Memory
of
Luther H. Soules, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Luther H. Soules, Jr., who
died May 6, 2003, at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, Luke was born in Mills County on August 11, 1915,
to Luther Hugh Soules, Sr., and Frances Blanche Harper Soules; and
WHEREAS, He was the valedictorian of the Goldthwaite High
School Class of 1933 and a graduate of Brantley and Draughan
Business College; and
WHEREAS, Luke cofounded Luke Soules, Incorporated, a food
brokerage agency, in 1962; over the years, he expanded the
business into a highly successful enterprise with 800 associates
throughout Texas, and he served as its chairman of the board; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary member of his community, Mr. Soules
was a member of Rotary International, the Sons of the Republic of
Texas, the Mayflower Society, and the Sons of the American
Revolution; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Luke Soules gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those
who knew him; and
WHEREAS, Luke was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Luther H. Soules, Jr.: his wife of 65 years,
Merle Soules; his daughter, Barbara Jeanette Young; his sons
and daughters-in-law, Luther H. Soules III and Andrea and
Marie and Joe Carlton Soules; his 10 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren; his brothers, Ed, Fred, J.T., and John Soules;
his sister, Janet; and his numerous nieces and nephews; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Luther H. Soules, Jr.
