SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1065
In Memory
of
Luella M. Bennack
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Luella M. Bennack, who died
April 17, 2003, at the age of 67; and
WHEREAS, Married to Frank A. Bennack, Jr., for 51 years,
Luella was a consummate wife and mother and a philanthropist who
supported numerous national charitable causes; and
WHEREAS, She was born in San Antonio, attended local schools,
and worked for Joske's of Texas and Sears Roebuck and Company;
when she moved with her husband to New York, she attended classes
at Fordham University and devoted herself to raising their five
daughters and volunteering at their schools; and
WHEREAS, During her husband's tour of duty with the
United States Army in Germany, she worked with an intelligence
agency in Stuttgart; she returned to retailing in the 1980s as
the owner of her own store, Kropotkin, in New Canaan, Connecticut,
which she operated until retiring in 1992; and
WHEREAS, As her husband rose through the ranks to
eventually become president and chief executive officer of
The Hearst Corporation, Mrs. Bennack became more involved with
charitable causes, including United Cerebral Palsy, which awarded
her with its Lifetime Service Award last year; and
WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Mrs. Bennack gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her
wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by
those who knew her; and
WHEREAS, Luella Bennack lived her life to the fullest
and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
the bereaved family of Luella M. Bennack: her husband,
Frank A. Bennack, Jr.; her daughters and sons-in-law,
Shelley Bennack McCullough and Robert, Dr. Laura Bennack and
Ron Peterson, Diane Bennack Sacchetti and John, Cynthia Hinson
and Eric, and Julie Bennack; her sisters and brother-in-law,
Linda Smith and Annabelle Leyendecker and Victor; her brother
and sister-in-law, Gary Smith and Joanie; and her grandchildren;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Luella M. Bennack.
