LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 78TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

May 6, 2003

TO:
Honorable Geanie Morrison, Chair, House Committee on Higher Education

FROM:
John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB1058 by Alonzo (Relating to Mexican-American studies programs and course work at certain public junior colleges. ), Committee Report 1st House, As Amended

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would require certain community college districts to evaluate the feasibility of establishing a Mexican-American studies program.  The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board assumes that students would take these courses in lieu of other course work, so the net amount of state funding to institutions would not change.

Local Government Impact

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.  Community college districts meeting the criteria may incur minimal costs in the effort to evaluate the feasibility of such courses in their district.
